Care Instructions
Your Ruya Creations bag is made from retired sailcloth — a material that has already endured sun, salt, and sea. With a little care, it will serve you well for years to come.
Weather Resistance
Sailcloth is designed to handle the elements, but keep in mind that older sails may have lost some of their original coatings over time. Your bag is weather resistant, not waterproof. It will handle light rain and splashes with ease, but we don’t recommend submerging it — the contents inside may get wet.
Cleaning Your Bag
Sailcloth is washable, and keeping your bag clean is straightforward:
- Spot clean first — for everyday dirt, use a soft brush and a small amount of gentle dish soap with warm water. This is usually all you need.
- Machine wash — for a deeper clean, the washing machine works well. Use a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent.
- No dryer — always air dry. Heat can damage the sailcloth fibres and any hardware on the bag.
- OxiClean — great for stubborn stains. Safe to use on sailcloth when following the product directions.
Tips and tricks
Keep in mind, all of the bags are made using recycled materials. This means that they already have some character built into each bag. Your unique bag may include discolouration and marks that are difficult to wash out. Rust is nearly impossible to wash without damaging the integrity of the material.
For High Tech, laminated sails:
These sails can be susceptible to delamination. If you fold and scrunch the bag too often, this may cause it to wear over time. You may be able to tape it or patch it to extend its life. Ruya Creations bags are guaranteed for one year after the date of purchase.
Hair Spray!
Fear not if you experience a crazy sudden stain. Sometimes there is a surprising fix; A customer had a pen explode in a white Dacron bag. They saturated the area with hairspray, put the bag through a wash cycle, and air dry. It came out like new.

Mold & Storage
Sailcloth can be susceptible to mold and mildew if stored while damp. Always make sure your bag is completely dry before storing, and keep it in a dry, well-ventilated space. If you spot any mildew, a diluted dish soap solution and a good scrub followed by thorough air drying will do the trick.
